Details from event's RunSignUp.com listing:
On July 20, 2009 19 year old Matt Scarpati was riding on the Wantagh State Bike Path. At about 7:30 pm a drunk and speeding motorcyclist, racing northbound on the Wantagh Parkway, left the parkway and struck and killed Matt. The sculpture, "Celebrate Life" that is in Cedar Creek Park, was born from a ghost bike that was presented to the Scarpati Family, as they fought for the guard rails that now create a barrier along the 4.5 miles of bike path that runs south of Merrick Road the Jones Beach Theatre. We celebrate the athlete in each of us, and the joy in doing this with friends and family. Never give up and keep on striding, no matter your pace. Keep running!
