Position Description:

The Lead Coach will play a key role in implementing the sixth season of the NYRR High School Cross Country Training Series. The series is designed to provide a free training program to NYC public high school students who will be participating in the fall PSAL Cross Country season. The Lead Coach must be able to design a training program that will guide 20-30 co-ed runners of all abilities to achieve their goals for the next cross country season while following the NYRR long term athlete development training guidelines.

Job Responsibilities:

 

  • Create a developmental stage appropriate training plan, with input and review from the NYRR staff, that engages all ability levels
  • Attend and actively coach each session from July 24 - August 17, including but not limited to:
    • Coaches’ Meeting: Second week in July
    • Orientation: July 20
    • Practices: July 24 - August 17, Monday –Thursday from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
  • Additional coaches’ meetings as needed
  • Communicate frequently with the Assistant Manager via phone, email and office visits. Respond to all correspondence promptly and reply to all requests by the specified deadline.
  • Coordinate and effectively engage Assistant Coaches
  • Ensure that participants are engaging in a safe and positive training environment
  • Work with NYRR team to organize workshops sessions and support presenters
  • Foster participants’ enjoyment of the sport as well as their talent
  • Demonstrate the highest level of professionalism and act as a role model to participants
  • Perform other tasks as needed

 

Position Requirements: 

  • Skills and Attributes:
    • Ability to create and implement youth cross country training plans
    • Ability to simultaneously coach and run a 5K without stopping (at any pace)
    • Ability to speak to large groups of youth and communicate instructions effectively
    • Punctuality and dependability; Attendance at all team events is required
    • Passion and commitment to NYRR Youth Services mission 
  • Experience: 
    • 5+ years coaching youth in middle school, high school setting or college setting
    • Experience in running at any level
