Looking for a Lead Coach and Assistant Coach for our NYRR Run for the Future Scholarship program.  For more info on the program click here.   
 

About the Position:
The Lead Coach will play a key role in implementing the seventh season of NYRR Run for the Future. The program is designed to teach rising senior high school girls, who have had limited to no athletic experience, how to incorporate running into their daily lives. The Lead Coach will work with the Program Manager to implement a training program that will help all participants complete a 5K race at the end of the season. The Lead Coach will engage the girls in discussions surrounding barriers to physical activity and ways to address these issues in their community.

Job Responsibilities: 
Under the direction of the Project Manager (former run coach and competitive runner), implement a training program and ultimately teach skills and lifelong habits that the girls can incorporate into their daily lives:   

  • Execute good judgment based off of experience coaching running and revise workouts when needed so to maximize the effectiveness of the program for each session 
  • Effectively use Assistant Coaches and two student mentors at each session
  • Communicate frequently with the Project Manger via phone, email and office visits. Respond to all correspondence promptly and reply to all requests by the specified deadline.
  • Encourage leadership and dialogue about key social justice issues as they pertain to health and fitness
  • Reward sportsmanship, personal effort and overall morale through weekly incentives
  • Ensure that participants are safely engaging in a positive training environment
  • Foster participants’ enjoyment of the sport as well as their talent
  • Perform other tasks as needed
  • Attend scheduled meetings and sessions from May 24 - August 31, including but not limited to the below requirements:
    • Evening staff meetings: beginning the end of May and through the program
    • Orientation: June 10
    • Practices: July 10 - August 25, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 8:00am – 10:00am, 9:00am – 11:00am, or 5:30pm – 7:30pm
    • Final race: August 26, Percy Sutton Harlem 5K Run
Position Requirements:
  • Skills and Attributes:
    • Ability to implement training plan to novice runners
    • Punctuality and dependability; Attendance at all team events is required
    • Ability to simultaneously coach and run a 5K without stopping (at any pace)
    • Heart, humor and a commitment to our Youth Services mission
  • Experience:
    • 3+ years coaching youth/novice athletes in the areas of track, cross country and/or running (experience coaching high school girls a plus)
    • Experience in running at any level
  • Education:
    • College degree required
    • First Aid and CPR/AED certification (or willingness to obtain certification through NYRR sponsored training)
